People don't read more than two to three word signs these days - no time, not interested, not engaging, boring. Signs and information need to be appropriate to the audience, appealing, simple and easily consumed. I could have written out the information needed to conduct an alteration, but words don't inspire or relate to a new staff member who has no connection with the tools and steps, for example "yellow & white ticket go on garment, pink goes in folder" brings up further questions "where/how do i put it on the garment?", "what does the folder look like?"
Pictures and icons are a good way of simplifying information for mass consumption, so as well as acting out the process with garments, I have it here (attached to the back of the A5 ticket pad) in hard copy.
